Kilimanjaro For Rory

Story

Dear family, friends and supporters,

My story behind this ambitious new adventure starts in 2012. It's a love story (but please don't let that deter you from reading this) filled with: happiness, determination, heartbreak, grief and difficulty but strength all the same to get back up again.

As a new adult at the age of 18 in 2012, I decided that after suffering throughout adolescence from severe depression and anxiety it was time to do something about it. Depression is a crippling, debilitating disease that consumed my every thought of every day and took away most of life's joys. But thanks to incredible not for profit organisations such as the Black Dog Institute I was able to bounce back up again (eventually). So young, naiive,  stubborn and a little stupid Naomi decided to go on her first alone overseas trip to the Lares Valley trek (an Inca trail) in Peru and raise $4000 for the Black Dog Institute. Somehow, I did it. And it was by far the best, stupid spontaneous decision I have ever made.

The people I met along the way were the best thing about this trip. And the ability to say 'Depression used to feel like climbing a mountain and today I climbed two' was a very good feeling.

On October 20th, 2012 we set off. That was the day I met Rory Hayward and unknowingly my life had changed for good. Rory was a shy, young man at the age of 24, with a wicked sense of humor and an astounding desire to put other people before himself. It only took 5 days of hiking, 4 mountains, 54kms, and 4500m altitude to fall in love with him. The next few months marked the happiest period of my young life, and the time I learnt the most valuable lessons. Rory taught me that: chocolate is the answer to every situation, you should always stay close to your friends, jest in a family = love,  it's not actually that hard to go out of your way a little for someone that needs it, age does not measure how much you have lived and every single moment in life is unbelievably precious. Make the most of it. Really Live.

On January 19th 2013, Rory passed away suddenly from an unexpected heart attack while playing Cricket with his mates one Saturday. Something he really loved doing. Since then, those who knew him have been carrying the term 'WWRD'- 'Would Would Rory Do' with them as a motto for how to live life. The way Rory lived.

Since this most horrible of days, I've had the dream to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, a trek he completed himself,  for Rory's (and my own) favourite charity The Black Dog Institute. My goal has always been to raise $10,000 and really help an unbelievably worthy cause.

One in five Australians are affected by mental illness each year. Mental illness can be overwhelming, crippling and isolating.
The Black Dog Institute has a vision of a mentally healthier world and I have decided to make a difference.

This charity and this cause means so much to me. Any donation great or small is eternally appreciated. If you don't manage to donate because your own funds are short, I completely understand but please keep the awareness of such an important issue in today's world and spread the word break the stigma. Together we can.

Thanks so much for your support!

Black Dog Institute

One in five Australians are affected by mental illness each year.

Mental illness can be overwhelming, crippling and isolating.

The Black Dog Institute is a not-for-profit organisation and world leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness such as depression, bipolar disorder and suicide.
We are the only mental health facility in Australia that combines clinical services, high quality translational research and education programs. We work to empower communities and help the stigma surrounding mental illness.

The Black Dog Institute has 4 important goals:
to diagnose mental illness accurately and early,
treat them using innovative, effective and accessible strategies,
prevent their onset by understanding why and who they affect
to reduce the overall impact of mental illness and save lives.

Black Dog Institute’s vision is for a mentally healthier world.
A world where the onset of depression and suicide can be prevented and treated. With your help we can make this vision a reality.
